What Is GEO?
Getting your business recommended by the machines.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of getting your business surfaced inside the answers that AI engines generate. When a prospect asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "who's the best roofer near me," GEO is the work that decides whether your name is in the answer. It's a new surface, with new rules. Here's what it is.
Search is splitting in two. People still type queries into Google — but a fast-growing share now ask a question of an AI and take the answer it gives. That answer names a few businesses and skips the rest. GEO is the discipline of being one of the few. Most local businesses have no presence here at all, which is exactly why it's an opening.
The definition.
GEO is optimizing for generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Claude — so your business appears in the answers they produce. Where traditional SEO competes for a ranked position in a list of links, GEO competes to be included and cited in a synthesized answer.
The distinction matters because the output is different. A search results page shows ten links and lets the user choose. An AI answer shows a short, confident recommendation — often three names, sometimes one — and most users don't look past it. Being in that shortlist is worth far more than ranking eighth on a page nobody scrolls. The three local search surfaces →
Why it's not just SEO with a new name.
GEO shares DNA with SEO — both reward a clear, credible, well-referenced web presence — but the mechanics diverge. Keyword density, the staple of old SEO, does almost nothing here. What an AI engine cares about is whether it can confidently understand who you are, what you do, and whether independent sources corroborate it.
That shifts the work toward three things: a crystal-clear business entity, a dense web of mentions and citations that confirm your relevance, and content structured so a model can extract a clean answer from it. Same goal as SEO — be the recommended choice — but a different path to it. GEO vs AEO vs LLM SEO →
How AI engines build their answers.
At a high level, generative engines draw on what they learned in training plus, increasingly, live retrieval from the web. When asked a local question, they assemble an answer from the sources they can find and trust — and they tend to favor businesses with consistent, corroborated information across many places.
This is why a business that's clearly described, consistently listed, and frequently mentioned shows up — and one with a thin, inconsistent footprint doesn't, no matter how good the service is. The engine recommends what it can verify. GEO is the work of making your business the easy, safe answer for it to give. How ChatGPT decides →
Why it matters now.
Two reasons. First, the behavior is real and growing — asking instead of searching is becoming normal, especially for the kind of "who should I call" questions local businesses live on. Second, and more important: almost no local competitors are working this surface yet. It's the 2010 of local SEO — wide open, with a window for early movers to build an advantage that's expensive to dislodge later.
We treat GEO as a peer to the map pack, not a curiosity. The businesses that establish AI-search presence now will be the defaults the engines reach for as the behavior compounds. AI Search Optimization →
Ask the engines about your market today.
The fastest way to understand GEO is to run the test: open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask for the best provider in your category and city. If a competitor's name comes back and yours doesn't, you've just watched a lead get handed to someone else — on a surface you're not yet competing on. That gap is the opportunity GEO closes.
